Eastgate development
Leeds Kirkgate Market is positioned immediately South of a proposed massive new retail development by private developer Hammerson being branded as Eastgate Quarters which we think poses real dangers to the Market’s character and future survival. This section of our website is constantly updated with latest news and analysis on how the proposed redevelopment of the Eastgate area will affect the Market and how supporters of the Market can take action.
1. What is Eastgate?
2. Why is Eastgate a Threat to the Market?
3. What are the wider concerns about Eastgate?
4. How can we challenge the Eastgate scheme to protect the Market?
It seems to me likely that the Eastgate development would be of such scale as to require Environmental Assessment (EA) under the European Directive, and the Local Planning Authority cannot legally grant consent until such assessment has been considered. Are you aware of whether an EA has been requested or produced? What are the expectred effects on CO2 (a) during construction, and (b) during operation. In any event, it seems likely that you will have more time than currently anticipated to oppose this development.
John, this sounds like good news. Here are the planning documents, could you possibly look and see if there is an EA here?

I think there is some guff about this being carbon neutral or something. I’m not sure what an EA document looks like, but if you can find it on here please let us know.
This site is massive, it’s like a tenth of the city centre, seems pretty out of proportion to me.
Oh, and you should have put a link to your amazing website. 🙂

The developer has put up a new site notice inviting comments on the scheme. The closing date for comments is the 24th June. See the bottom of this link for more info……
