What a great idea. I worked in the market when I was 16 for four years (44 now). I worked in the mini market (old cattle market now the bus station) at a coat stall and household goods stall and also row B for the same boss selling coats. What a place with weird and wonderful people from all walks of life. The noise/smell and atomosphere was amazing.

I visited the market for the first time in over 20 years a couple of weeks ago as I don’t get into Leeds often. I was gutted at the change. Half empty stalls (probably because of high sky rent). Car parking charges don’t help encourage people into Leeds either. The Nut shop had gone which I spent most of my wages on their weighed nuts and sweets. It just seemed to have lost its buzz and I hope your campaign will help stop American generic malls crushing this icon of Leeds and also that traders can afford to do business and make a living.

Oh does enyone remember the woman who had the handbag stall with the big beehive hair. Also the rastafarian who used to just wear trousers and no shirt in all weathers. Oooh and that woman who actually had a house but dressed like a tramp and used to go round the market screaming and yelling to herself (poor woman must have been a mental illness). The really bad fruit stall who gave you bad fruit but polished the good stuff on display and wouldn’t let you buy it and took the rubbish from under the stall on the outside bit
