Lord Mayor supports campaign and signs petition to lower rents
In a visit to Kirkgate Market on 17th of July Leeds Lord Mayor signed our petition to lower rents, invest in the market buildings and give more power to traders.
Lord Mayor Cllr James McKenna and his wife Councillor Andrea McKenna came to visit Leeds Kirkgate Market on Saturday 17th of July. He was invited by traders concerned about their businesses and the general state of the Market. Lord Mayor and his wife were given a tour around the Market and spoke to traders and customers. He heard about high rents and the poor state of the building but also about hard-working traders and customers who are passionate about the Market. Customers approached him to urge him to “save the market”. Lord Mayor used to be a regular visitor of the market when he was a bus driver and Lady Mayoress now comes to a new dress making stall.
Market traders laid out a reception with light refreshments on one of the Market stalls and presented the Lord Mayor with a painting by Leslie Child depicting the Market.
Lord Mayor’s support to our petition adds weight to the campaign. The petition was also signed by Councillor Mark Dobson who is now the Markets Champion at our launch meeting on the 26th of April.
